Slide Show Narrative: The South Slough of Oregon’s Coos Bay estuary was first in the nation to be designated a national estuarine research reserve. Its tidal waters stretch deep into the coastal forest, marking the landward limits of the marine environment. When it was designated a reserve in 1974, forests surrounding the estuary had been heavily logged and wetlands were filled for agriculture. Supporters of the reserve envisioned the area reverting to a pristine and natural condition. Since creating the reserve, intensive commercial uses have been curtailed. Restoring natural processes is now a top priority while keeping South Slough available for public recreation.
