The workshops featured expert presentations designed to raise
awareness of the natural and social science issues of MPAs.
The following were presented at the different regional workshops.
They are formatted as Adobe Acrobat© PDF files for your
convenience for printing and distribution. These versions are
fully annotated with the speakers' commentary. If you are interested

The
MPA Story A National Overview (pdf, 250 kb)
Lisa Wooninck, Charles Wahle, and Marjorie Ernst reviewed basic
issues surrounding MPAs, including a brief history of MPAs,
different types found in the United States, and their goals.
The presentation also reviews the Executive Order, the goals
of the National MPA Center and some of the Center's progress
to date. 2001/2.
A
Look at Topical Science and Research Efforts (pdf,
220 kb)
A subset of the results of a study on MPAs undertaken by the
National Research Council, a division of the United States National
Academies is presented. The presentation, Marine Protected Areas:
Tools for Sustaining Ocean Ecosystems, provides a review of
MPAs including their goals and some of the challenges they face.
Topics covered include fish population dynamics and spatial
management issues important for appropriate MPA design.
The
Role of Science in Defining MPA Goals, Design, and Evaluation
(pdf, 713 kb)
Mark Carr describes scientific principles behind MPAs and the
need for appropriate scientific considerations in their design,
evaluation and monitoring for MPAs to succeed. The presentation
includes considerations for fisheries, ecology and reserve design.
September 2002.
American
Attitudes Toward Marine Protected Areas and Fully Protected
Marine Reserves (pdf, 308 kb)
The results of two studies of American attitudes towards marine
protected areas are presented. The studies' findings emphasize
the public's concern for the health of our oceans and support
for conservation efforts. In contrast to their concern, however,
the studies show that the public lack a grasp of the true facts
concerning MPA issues, emphasizing the need for a wider education
effort.
Bringing
Social Science into MPA Management and Education (pdf,
280 kb)
Leah Bunce and Sarah Lyons provided insight into the need for
bringing social science into MPA management in this presentation.
It reviews ecological and human dimensions that determine the
social science variables that need to be considered for MPA
management. The presentation describes case study examples demonstrating
the importance of considering the stakeholders in the design
and management of MPAs and provides examples of how social science
can be incorporated into MPA education. 2001/2.
The
Social Science Research Strategy for MPAs (pdf, 202
kb)
Sarah Lyons describes the process taken to develop the Social
Science Strategy and provides an overview of the strategy. She
reviews the need to strengthen the human dimension in MPA design
and management. The strategy is intended to improve the incorporation
of social science into MPA research, consideration and funding.
