MPA Education Pilot Workshop Presentations
The workshops feature presentations designed
to raise awareness of the natural and social science issues
of MPAs. The following were presented at the Wye River MPA Education
Workshop on November 19-20, 2001.
The
MPA Executive Order and the MPA Initiative (pdf, 1 Mb)
This presentation reviews basic issues surrounding MPAs, including
reasons for designating MPAs and a brief history of MPAs.
Different types of MPAs found in the United States are described.
The presentation also reviews the Executive Order, the goals
of the National MPA Center and some of the Center's progress
to date.
A
Look at Topical Science and Research Efforts (pdf, 220
kb)
A subset of the results of a study on MPAs undertaken by the
National Research Council, a division of the United States
National Academies is presented. The presentation, Marine
Protected Areas: Tools for Sustaining Ocean Ecosystems, provides
a review of MPAs including their goals and some of the challenges
they face. Topics covered include fish population dynamics
and spatial management issues important for appropriate MPA
design.
American
Attitudes Toward Marine Protected Areas and Fully Protected Marine
Reserves (pdf, 308 kb)
The results of two studies of American attitudes towards marine
protected areas are presented. The studies' findings emphasize
the public's concern for the health of our oceans and support
for conservation efforts. In contrast to their concern, however,
the studies show that the public lack a grasp of the true
facts concerning MPA issues, emphasizing the need for a wider
education effort.
Bringing
Social Science into MPA Management and Education (pdf,
280 kb)
Insight into the need for bringing social science into MPA
management is provided in this presentation. To begin, it
reviews ecological and human dimensions that determine the
social science variables that need to be considered for MPA
management. Following is a presentation of case study examples
demonstrating the importance of considering the stakeholders
in the design and management of MPAs.
